Overview: Paul will discuss the importance of health information technologies in the transition to payment for quality and cost-effectiveness by discussing the critical aspects of accountable care, forms of such care that are important to align incentives, and what accountable care may mean for the future. Among other things, Paul will also address:

  • ​Th​​e new Medicare Shared Savings Rule for ACOs.
  • How biomedical and clinical informatics are taking center stage with the employment of EHRs, PHRs, Clinical Decision Support Systems, Evidence Based Medicine, Computerized Physician Order Entry, E-Prescribing and HIEs.
  • The paradigm shift to patient-centered healthcare and how mHealth, social media, telemedicine, and patient-generated data are facilitating the transition.
Bio: Paul is Of Counsel in the Fort Lauderdale office of Broad and Cassel. Previously a partner at several prominent law firms, including Latham & Watkins, Paul has worked on physician hospital integration projects for almost 30 years. Driving his practice is Paul’s passion for the cost-effective delivery of quality health care. He has practiced extensively in the area of corporate transactions, accountable care organizations, clinical integration, healthcare antitrust associated with innovative structures and ventures, value-based purchasing, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), corporate organization, governance, finance, healthcare district law and regulatory compliance.

Paul has also handled matters in the areas of Medicare reimbursement, fraud and abuse, compliance and managed care. Paul represents hospitals, health systems, accountable care organizations, physicians, physician groups, physician practice companies, integrated health systems, managed care organizations, e-health care and health care technology companies, and ancillary providers, including laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, DME companies, clinics, home health agencies, etc., commercial lenders and investment banks in health care transactions and in internal investigations.

Paul has authored or co-authored over 135 publications and has delivered numerous presentations throughout the world on health care issues. He has also delivered more than 350 presentations on a national and regional basis over the last few years.

Overview: Interoperability is becoming more and more complex as it becomes overwhelmed with technical acronyms and standards jargon.

While emerging standards such as FHIR and the increasing trend towards Web Service APIs hold promise for better health insights, the risk of unnecessary IT investment remains a real concern for many providers.

What will separate the thriving from the struggling healthcare providers is the ability to integrate a wider range of data sources regardless of format, as opposed to re-integrating their existing workflow.

Toni will evaluate the current landscape of interoperability, explore the implications of standards trends and discuss the keys to interoperability success today and in the future.

He has over 20 years of experience in software development, customer management and product management, with the last 16 years spent in healthcare. Bio: Prior to joining Optime Patrick was Vice President for Corporate Development for Meridio where as a part of the senior management team Patrick worked towards a successful transaction with Autonomy. Previous to that role, Patrick had responsibility for business development strategy and execution, marketing and sales including forming strategic partnerships with key organizations such as Microsoft. During this period Meridio grew to be a global leader in the Document and Records Management segment of the Enterprise Content Management market.
